About:
This is a multi-pass render test for Mental Ray with Max.
Never really used mental ray apart from some ambient occlusion
tests, so this time I'm working on a project using the Mental
Ray renderer exclusively in order to find out what makes it
tick :)
This is just a very simple, car model on background test.
The car that I've modelled is the 1978 Dome-0 Prototype from
Dome Racing.
I really like this design; it is timeless. For indirect illumination,
only Final Gather = 100 was used, no caustics or GI. I set
the Max Radius to the same radius as a sphere enough to cover
the scene. Min Radius was at 10% of that. This decreased the
render time from about 50 mins to 20+ mins!!!! And not to
mention removed all the artifacts. (Render resolution was
at 1280x856)
Let's start with the passes.
First up we have the
diffuse pass.
Next is the reflection pass:
And added over the diffuse pass:
Next is the refraction pass.
And once again, added over the other passes.
Finally, the alpha channel:
Note that some of the alpha channel
is grey, allowing the background to bleed through.
Which extracts the dome-0 neatly out of the black.
Next, to layer it on top of the plate, which is a still
image from a digital camera.
(*Note*: I've already done the camera match prior to
rendering the passes)
Next, the ambient occlusion pass.
I set this in multiply mode over the all the other
layers:
Finally, some color corrections
were performed.
Crop the car to 16:9, some specular blooms, and tadah!
